Legislative Internship Opportunity (Unpaid)
Location: Austin, TX
The office of State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins is seeking applicants that are interested in legislative, administrative work, and communications for unpaid internships through the Spring 2020 semester. Spring applicants must have general, part-time or full-time availability through May 2020. College credit available, where possible.
Essential Job Functions:
•Answer incoming calls and greet visitors
•Research past and future legislation
•Perform general typing and administrative assignments, as needed
•Completing administrative duties and various levels of research
•Monitoring legislative and regulatory committee hearings
•Tracking legislation during the legislative session
•Analyzing policy and the implementation process
•Maintain a good working relationship with the Representative, staff, constituents, stakeholders, and agency staff
•Other duties assigned by the Chief of Staff
Applicants should have strong research and writing skills, well-developed organizational and interpersonal skills, solid computer and typing skills, effective communication skills, the ability to work under tight deadlines, thoroughness and careful attention to detail, must be able to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner, work cooperatively and courteously with others, ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement in fulfillment of responsibilities, proficiency in office computer applications and word processing, as well as the ability to learn independently and under direction. Applicants should also have an avid interest in government and the legislative process.
